Jennie and Euan have been tramping in New Zealand for (collectively) nearly 100 years and we can now both go back to huts we last visited over 40 years ago (provided we can still get there!) In that time, huts have come and gone, sometimes more than once, the technology for recording them has changed from small black-and-white contact prints to 10MG+ digital colour, and backcountry gear has improved out of all recognition.
The thing that has not got better, despite the advertising hype and techno blurb, are packs. I still have a metal-frame Mountain Mule ("It carries the load!") with an oversize canvas bag (80 litres). It weighs about 3kg and reliably keeps my gear dry. No modern pack does that, and it is reasonably comfortable to carry. In the 1960's I returned a pack to the manufacturer because it leaked! Imagine doing that with a modern pack!
This file is a small proportion of the the 500+ huts Euan has visited over the last 50 years and the 420 or so huts Jennie has bagged. They are in alphabetical order (more or less) but photos added recently may be at the end of the file.
More will be added as time and flagging energy permits.
